Prevent Your Baby Monitor from Getting Hacked

Even though there have been quite a few reports about wireless baby monitors being hacked, it seems that not too many people really understand the seriousness of this situation until it happens to them or to someone close to them. A lot of people make use of baby monitoring equipment nowadays to monitor their babies and in order to get peace of mind when not around. But while hacking a baby monitor may not be a very lucrative venture, hackers often hack into electronic devices more for their own entertainment than anything else. Sometimes they hack devices just because they can. The good news though is that there are a few things you can do to ensure your baby monitor is secure and that you will never be victim to such threats. Let's take a look at some of these precautions:

1. The first thing that you need to do is ensure you are a vigilant consumer. You can never be 100 % sure of your safety but you can ensure you are pretty close. If you are using a wireless monitoring device in your home, you will be prone to hacks, but if you can be vigilant and recognize the limitations of your device, you should be able to do a pretty decent job of protecting yourself against hackers.

2. The biggest argument among experts is whether you should use a digital baby monitor or an analog one. Systems which can be used through your home Wi-Fi tend to be a lot more secure although they cost a lot more money as well. You can go through any of the consumer reports when it comes to digital and analog cameras to understand the differences and determine which one will be most suitable for your home.

3. If you are using a Wi-Fi camera, it is recommended that you install the highest possible encryption. You can even go as far as defining the ip addresses which are allowed to access your Wi-Fi network - that would be the most bullet-proof way to prevent your baby monitor from getting hacked.

4. Encryption isn't the only thing that will keep your baby monitor secure. If you have the strongest encryption out there but use a simple password like 'password,' chances are you will get hacked quite easily. It is important that you choose passwords which are not common and not related to you personally like your birthdate, anniversary, etc. Use a combination of letters and numbers. Try to make them as random as possible. This is the only way to ensure you can't get hacked easily.

At the end of the day if all else fails, you will find that the simplest way of ensuring wireless security is by simply unplugging the device. Maybe that's not an option for some of you? Why not resort to the traditional audio only models.
